Lifetime of Memories Fishing

What do you do with your child that can build into a lifetime of memories? What do you do that will enable you to share adventure, stories, great sights and the healthy outdoors? What can you do with your child that doesn’t involve movies, video games or paved asphalt? Even more on my mind, what will enable you to do all of this without spraining your back, gaining a black eye, or losing your breath and your ability to speak? Don’t get me wrong, I like competitive sports, but sport fishing is definitely more my style than rugby or soccer when it comes to spending quality time with another person.

Grandparents knew best. Wasn’t it grandfather who used to get out the old fishing rod and lures to spend quality time with his grandchild while spinning tales that seemed to expand with the sea? Wasn’t it grandmother who used to show the very best way to smoke and cure the fish so that it melted like a cube of sugar in the mouth? Get out the old fishing lures, even better get out the new ones! Even better than that get yourself a fishing guide who can navigate the ocean waves for you while you concentrate on enjoying this moment with your child. Breathe the clean salty air into your lungs, marvel in the sparkle of the sun on the water and bond over reeling in the biggest fish you and your child have ever caught together.

It doesn’t stop with a father and son. Mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, brothers, friends, companions, working colleagues–Salmon and/or Halibut fishing on the West Coast of Vancouver Island provides a great bonding experience between all kinds of age groups, and it never gets old. Men, women and children laugh over the fish stories they have to tell each other. Listen to how I caught the biggest salmon and he fought me all the way to the surface of the water! How about the time when the whales came to join us on our adventure and greeted us on the way out to the fishing beds? Remember when Sarah squealed with delight as she touched the shiny scales of the Salmon we reeled in together? I remember when we saw an Eagle swoop down to take a fish right off the surface of the water… There is no end to the stories you could create together–true stories. Salmon fishing is an ideal sport for that family trip you’ve been hoping to make, and Ucluelet is a great place to take them. Eagles, whales, multiple “sweet spots” to fish Coho, Chinook and Halibut–Ucluelet has it all.

Ucluelet is only a short distance from places like Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Port Alberni. This, paired with the fact that Ucluelet is connected to the rest of Vancouver Island through a beautiful stretch of paved highway leading to one of Canada’s most renowned national parks, makes Ucluelet an ideal place to bring your child fishing. Pacific Rim National park plays host to thousands of different varieties of trees, plants, small animals, aquatic birds and marine life. The incredible diversity of the ecosystems this area hosts is immediately evident even to the most untrained eye–semi-arid desert-like plants spring up against lush marsh grasses and peat moss bog, thick rainforest and rolling sand dunes. The multitude of beaches and trails that trace their way through these areas could take up more than a couple of days during your trip.

You don’t need to relegate yourself to sleep in a tent or trailer either. Connect up with a fishing resort or charter such as Salmon Eye Charters in Ucluelet, B.C. and you could easily stay in a beautifully situated and comfortable cabin or lodge. You could also get your catch sealed and packaged to bring home, then you and your children could experience several different ways to cook your catch, savoring together the tasty dishes you helped to get that very day. When not fishing, you could be exploring the Wild Pacific Trail, building castles in the sand, admiring or becoming one of the surfers on Cox Bay in nearby Tofino, collecting shells or checking out the newly built Ucluelet Recreation Centre. Possibilities are endless for those with a guide to the area or a nose to explore.

Families are great for trips at any time of the year, and schedules are constantly flexing, which is why fishing for Salmon, be they Chinook (King) or Coho (Silver), or fishing for Halibut on the West Coast out of Ucluelet is great because good fishing can be had from the tail end of Spring all throughout the summer and into the Fall, from May to the end of September. As well, if  you take your fishing trip with a charter such as Salmon Eye Charters in Ucluelet BC, you will be guaranteed to catch lots of fish. (See: http://www.salmoneye.net/salmon-guarantee/ ). Check out the available fishing videos on the internet to give yourself a taste for what you might experience on British Columbia’s wonderful West Coast. Traveling with your family need not be a stressful experience, especially if you have a destination with such variety of choice available. Finally, don’t forget to bring your camera! Even if you forget to use it, your children won’t! Your child’s perspective on your combined fishing adventure will be priceless in years to come.
